Evil – Conspirators with or Conquerors of?
The scary thing in this passage is the demons. But there are two different sets of demons here – or rather two different kinds of evil. There is the legion of demons which have possessed the Gerasene demoniac. And, there are the demons, or the evil, that possess the people of the surrounding country who come to witness the healing…
The Apocalypse is Here! 2012
For those of you who have not heard, the apocalypse has happened! Hostess has gone bankrupt. People everywhere are grieving over the loss of Twinkies, Sno-balls and Ho Ho’s. Facebook was awash with laments over the injustice of a world devoid of these sweet treats. Some wonder if death is not better than a world without Twinkies. The cry has arisen, how long, O Lord, must we live without cream-filled spongecakes!…
Stop Complaining 2012
Can people make God mad? Yes, we can. The reading from Numbers makes it very clear that we humans can infuriate God. How do we do this? By complaining about our “hardships” in the midst of God’s goodness. In the beginning of Chapter 11, the Israelites have the nerve to complain to God about their “hardships” as they wander in the wilderness. Oh, my, their lives are so hard. God is visibly with them. God has been visibly with them and provided for them for over two years. And yet the people have the nerve to complain about their hardship…
Saints Bystanders to the Resurrection All Saints 2012
Today, we hear the story of Lazarus being raised from the dead. Lazarus in his life was a believer in Jesus as the Messiah. Mary and Martha, Lazarus’ sisters, also believe Jesus to be the Son of God. So, it is a troubling thing for Mary and Martha, that Jesus would permit Lazarus, someone Jesus loved to die when Jesus had the power to prevent Lazarus’ death…
The Church – A House Without Walls 2012
When I worked for the State of Illinois, one of my roles was to research accommodations for persons with disabilities. As a civil services test developer, it was my role to research and recommend accommodation alternatives so that persons with disabilities could participate equitably in the civil service employment process. Over time, accommodations offered included Braille and large print exams, sign language interpreters, screen reading software, wheelchair accessible testing stations, and other accommodations…
Seuss for Graduates Ascension 2011
When I graduated from high school, I received the Dr. Seuss classic, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go.” Some of you may have also received this book as a graduation gift. The book talks about the path that lies ahead of you as you leave the nest. Much of what Dr. Seuss says is quite wise. But he missed a few points along the way…and on some points he goes quite astray…
Knowing God Trinity Sunday 2011
Did you know that the doctrine of the Holy Trinity is based in part on the first chapter of Genesis? In English the word God seems to be a singular noun. But the Hebrew word for God is “elohim.” The “im” ending in Hebrew is a plural ending. So, Elohim, or God, is really a plural noun. Yet, interestingly, although “elohim” is a plural noun it is almost always associated with a singular adjective or verb in the Old Testament. The grammar of Genesis is our first indication that our God is a mystery…
